Hands That Touch So Many ... Lifting Spirits High
An Enduring Gift Is The Touch That Would Mean So Much
A Heritage of Giving ... The Start of New Beginnings The Gentle tapping of a restless finder. A foot astray, the shuffling gait, a shifting world. The comfort of a warm embrace, a knowing nod, a helping hand. The Parkinsonian's world is quite apart for most of us. Yet, until there is a cure, your support will help the Parkinson's Disease Association of San Diego tend to the needs of an ever-growing number of families who depend upon us to improve their quality of life. While promising medical research and new treatment options offer hope, we are here to provide innovative programs and services to help bring stability and continuity in the everyday life of the Parkinsonian family. Today, Parkinson's Disease affects more than 50,000 in San Diego and our responsibility is expanding to serve those emerging needs. That is why an enduring gift is the touch that would mean so much. They come in walkers. Or chairs, with canes and without, a gentle grace concealing an indomitable spirit. They sing and dance and share a laugh. The learn, They cope. They persevere. They find support and gain insight from the Parkinson's Disease Association of San Diego. For more than 20 years, PDASD has been providing Parkinsonians, family members and care givers the tools, programs and services for education, technology and familial support to minimize the impact of this chronic and progressive illness. Many of the educational services are offered through the William S. Cowling II Educational Resource Center. Now You Can Create a Legacy of Giving Now you can incorporate the Parkinson's Disease Association of San Diego into your wealth planning and fulfill your philanthropic legacy. There are a number of vehicles by which you may accomplish your legacy of giving. Ther are endowment gifts, gifts of stock, cash, insurance, appreciated assets -- gifts for today and for tomorrow. Such is available through our Leadership Giving -- personal investments in your lifetime or through your estate. Perhaps you would appreciate membership in the Heritage Society and join peers who share your commitment to supporting the ongoing work of PDASD with your philanthropic endeavors and the recognition it so richly deserves. Assisting Parkinson's Families Since 1989 PDASD is entering a new era of service with a clear mission and focus on improving the quality of life through innovative programs and services. We will continue to meet the challenges of providing stability in the constantly evolving world of the Parkinson's patient, with its new treatment options and promising medical research. By becoming a member of The Heritage Society of the Parkinson's Disease Association of San Diego, you are demonstrating your intent to assure a brighter future for those affected by Parkinson's. Your generous gift will ensure the continuity of the services needed to help future Parkinsonians. Plant Your Legacy of Giving Bequests Perhaps, simplest of all is to consider making a bequest to the Parkinson's Disease Association of San Diego in your will. Whatever you choose to do, please be sure to speak with a qualified tax consultant or attorney and discuss your decision with your family. To make a bequest of cash or property to PDASD, your will or supplemental codicil should state: "I give and bequeath to the Parkinson's Disease Association of San Diego, a non-profit corporation, organized under the laws of the State of California and as of this statement, having its offices at 8555 Aero Drive, Suite 308, San Diego CA 92123, the sum of $ ______ or ______ % of the residue, rest and remainder of my estate to be used for the general purposes and mission of the organization." Appreciated Equities While your checkbook may be the usual vehicle for making gifts, consider making a gift of stock. Stocks that you have owned for more than a year are probably significantly more valuable today. If you choose to sell them, you will pay a capital gains tax on the increased value of the stock. However, when you donate that stock to the PDASD, you pay no capital gains tax and you will also receive an income tax deduction for the full value of the stock. Life Insurance Policies Do you have a paid-up life insurance policy that has been gathering dust in a drawer? It was probably intended for your children, who are now grown and have sufficient assets of their own. Making the PDASD the owner and beneficiary of that policy provides an income tax deduction for you and a great gift for charitable purposes. Real Estate Did you know that if you donate real estate that is more valuable today than when you bought it, your tax deduction is the present market value and there is no tax on the capital gain? This is an excellent way to divest yourself of property that has appreciated in value, but that you no longer need, while helping to support the PDASD. You can also make a gift of your home, receive a tax deduction and continue to live in your home with a Life Estate Reserved. You deed your home to the PDASD with an agreement that you continue to live in your home. You maintain your residence, pay property taxes, etc. We do not assume total ownership of the property until after your lifetime. Gift Retirement Plans The tax consequences of transferring any assets in these plans to anyone but your spouse or a nonprofit charitable organization can be extremely severe. Instead of having the assets heavily taxed consider donating them to the PDASD. If you make the PDASD the successor beneficiary of your spouse the assets will not be reduced by taxes and you will have the satisfaction that comes from knowing that families affected by Parkinson’s will receive support improving their quality of life. Endowment Funds
Why Build An Endowment? Successful endowment building requires a steadfast dedication to the principle of investing for the future. As an endowment fund grows over time, the long-term benefit of committing to this principle becomes apparent. Income earned from the endowment can be reinvested to compound growth or to provide a predictable income stream. Endowment income lessens the pressure to raise dollars for current operating expenses and helps to smooth out the ups and downs of the economic cycle. Additionally, a healthy endowment sends a positive message to donors that PDASD has achieved a key measure of financial stability thus enabling it to fulfill its mission for generations to come. Contributors to the PDASD Endowment at the San Diego Foundation and the Jewish Community Foundation have the confidence of knowing that their gifts will continue to give in perpetuity. Both foundations require specific minimum contributions in order to establish donor directed or named funds, however, if you want your contribution to benefit the PDASD Endowment directly, there is no minimum requirement. When you contribute to PDASD through either of the above mentioned foundations you automatically become an honored member of the Parkinson's Disease Association of San Diego Heritage Society, and your gift, will be preserved to ensure the ongoing services of the PDASD. Your contribution to the PDASD Endowment can be as simple as writing a check or, if you want your endowment contribution to be part of your estate or other planned gift, there are several other options to meet your individual wishes and goals. If your contribution meets certain minimums, the foundations’ planning resources are at your disposal. These include complex gifts such as real estate and closely held business interests, and either of the foundations can act as trustee for charitable remainder and lead trusts. In addition, charitable gift annuities can be administered by either of the foundations which will pay you an income for life. The remainder of your charitable gift annuity is then placed in a designated endowment fund benefiting PDASD in perpetuity. The PDASD Endowment ensures that your legacy will be there to help those facing Parkinson’s until a cure is discovered. But even then, the role of PDASD will be needed to provide support groups, in-home respite care and other services for those who are newly diagnosed. We invite you to help us build the PDASD Endowment to provide a promising future for all those affected by Parkinson’s. Plant Your Legacy of Giving Download Heritage Society Brochure Making a significant planned gift to PDASD not only establishes your legacy but also assures the ongoing work of the Association for years to come. Your gift will continue to help improve the quality of life for those affected by Parkinson's, and create a future of hope. Hendrix, Ph.D. Please Consider Partnering With PDASD to Improve Quality of Life Your investment helps support programs and services that improve the quality of life for families affected by Parkinson's, and provides funding for medical research seeking more effective treatments and a cure. Consider the story of the great French Marshal Lyautey, who once asked his gardener to plant a tree. The gardener objected that the tree was slow growing and wouldn't mature for 100 years. The marshal replied, "In that case, there is no time to lose, plant it this afternoon."
