Current Research Studies

Cognitive Skills Research Study for Individuals with Parkinson's

Dawn Schiehser, Ph.D. and J. Vincent Filoteo, Ph.D. are currently conducting a research study to evaluate if people with Parkinson's disease and cognitive impairment benefit from a cognitive rehabilitation course.

Participants in this study are asked to come to the San Diego VA Medical Center and take paper/pencil tests that will evaluate your abilities, including memory and attention. You will also be asked to participate in a 12-week cognitive rehabilitation course that will meet once per week for 1.5 - 2 hours. The cognitive rehabilitation course will teach you strategies to improve attention, concentration, memory, organization, and planning skills.

UCSD Research Study on Brain Response to Dopamine

Deborah L. Harrington, Ph.D. is conducting a research study at the UCSD and the San Diego VA that uses functional magnetic resonance imaging to study brain activity in Parkinson's disease and the brain's response to dopamine medications that people are currently taking. All procedures are noninvasive and safe.

You may be eligible if you are between the ages of 45 to 80 years old. People with mild to moderate symptoms (e.g., balance problems) are encouraged to volunteer. We also encourage people who are in general good health to volunteer. This study DOES NOT involve changing current medication therapy. People without Parkinson's disease will not take any medications.

Participants will be compensated for participation and receive pictures of their brain.

This research project, conducted by the University of California San Diego, will be studying sleep problems in Parkinson’s patients to daytime sleepiness and improve memory function.
