Parkinson’s Step by Step Raises More than $280,000
for Education Services and Support of Promising Research
Gray skies didn’t dampen the enthusiasm, as the annual Fighting Parkinson’s Step by Step 5K Walk & Fun Run, held on Saturday, April 21st at NTC Park at Liberty Station, raised more than $280,000 … a record total.
More than 180 teams and over 2,200 participants took part in the event; a major fundraiser for the Parkinson’s Association of San Diego (PASD). By comparison, a total of 120 teams raised $232,000 last year.
“We are delighted with the response of the community for this wonderful event”, said Ron Hendrix, PASD Executive Director. “The event has been a must-attend for those challenged by Parkinson’s.”
One of the highlights of the 2012 Step by Step 5K Walk & Fun Run was the presentation of a check for $200,000 from the Parkinson’s Association of San Diego’s Summit4StemCell Team to the Scripps Research Institute in support of its non-embryonic stem cell Parkinson’s research project.
The event included a Medical Expo with representation from top neurological medical groups, Parkinson’s research companies, and Parkinson’s pharmaceutical and medical equipment companies, the Paws for Parkinson’s™ Pet Festival (with dogs available for adoption), and the Health & Fitness Festival where visitors learned about healthy living, exercise therapy, and voice and dance therapies to assist Parkinson’s patients, families, and their care partners.
