Physicians and Pharmacists Symposium
The Physicians and Pharmacists Symposium was held on October 27, 2012 at the UCSD Medical Education & Telemedicine Conference Hall. The symposium provided participants with a greater understanding of Parkinson’s treatment risks and benefits, and presented new developments in research that allow clinicians, pharmacists, and healthcare professionals to better educate and care for patients with PD. Educational objectives were as follows:
• Critically examine the clinical motor and non-motor features of Parkinson’s disease.
• Organize a differential diagnosis and/or know when to refer patients to a specialist.
• Discuss current and novel therapeutic approaches for management of Parkinson’s disease.

2012 Parkinson’s Renaissance Gala
The 10th annual Parkinson’s Renaissance Gala, honoring UCSD Chancellor Emerita Marye Anne Fox, was held on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at the Westin San Diego Hotel. Proceeds from the event help us improve the quality of life for more than 60,000 individuals and family members personally affected by Parkinson’s. The 2013 “Parkinson’s Renaissance Gala” event date will be announced soon, so please check back.
Scripps Parkinson’s Boot Camp
On October 2, 2012, neurologist Melissa Houser, M.D. and a team of health care professionals presented a full day of education and fun activities for people with Parkinson’s disease. Highlights included:
• Presentations on the psychological impact of Parkinson’s, the benefits of exercise and positive attitude, dietary considerations and integrative approaches to treatment.
• Information on the role of rehabilitation care for Parkinson’s, including speech and swallowing concerns and the benefits of physical therapy.
• An update on the various treatment options for Parkinson’s.
• Activities such as cardiovascular and strength training; balance and flexibility; and gait, posture and balance assessments.
• Yoga and meditation exercises.
